MSP vs MSSP: Managed IT or Managed Security?
An MSP runs your IT day to day. An MSSP focuses on security: monitoring, detecting and responding to threats. Plenty of providers offer both, and the line has blurred.
| MSP | MSSP | |
|---|---|---|
| Main focus | Keeping IT working: helpdesk, devices, patching, backups, cloud and projects. | Detecting and responding to cyber threats, often with a security operations centre (SOC). |
| Typical services | User support, onboarding, hardware and software management, vendor liaison. | 24/7 monitoring, threat detection and response, vulnerability management, incident response. |
| Hours | Usually business hours helpdesk, with optional out-of-hours cover. | Often round the clock, because attacks don't keep office hours. |
| Who needs it | Almost every business without a full IT team. | Businesses with sensitive data, regulatory pressure or a higher threat profile. |
| Pricing | Per user or per device for the whole IT service. | Often per endpoint or per log volume, on top of general IT support. |
MSP makes sense if...
- You need everyday IT support, patching and backups
- You don't have in-house IT staff
- Security basics are covered by your IT provider
MSSP makes sense if...
- You need round-the-clock threat monitoring and response
- You handle sensitive data or face regulatory scrutiny
- Insurers or clients are asking for proof of monitoring
Our honest take
Most small and mid-sized businesses are best served by an MSP that includes security monitoring in its service, rather than buying two separate contracts. Ask any provider exactly what monitoring is included, who watches the alerts, and what happens at 2am.
