VPN (Virtual Private Network)

An encrypted connection that lets remote devices securely reach internal company systems over the internet.

A VPN creates a private, encrypted tunnel between a device and a company network, so remote staff can reach internal resources (file shares, internal apps) as if they were in the office, without that traffic being readable if intercepted. Many businesses are moving toward Zero Trust-based remote access instead of a traditional VPN, but VPNs remain common and perfectly adequate for a lot of use cases.
