A SOC is the people and systems continuously monitoring alerts from EDR, firewalls, email filtering and other security tools, so a genuine threat gets a human response within minutes rather than being noticed the next morning. For most small businesses this isn't built in-house — it's provided as a service by an MSP or dedicated security vendor.
