Can You Actually Restore From Them?
A backup is only useful if you can get your data back from it. Test restores are the step almost everyone skips. Without them, you simply don't know whether your backup is complete, uncorrupted and usable until disaster strikes. Regularly restoring a sample of files proves your safety net actually works.
Is Everything Important Covered?
Businesses change constantly. New systems get added, data moves around, and people start using new apps. A backup set up two years ago may be missing things that have since become critical. Reviewing exactly what is and isn't being backed up ensures there are no nasty surprises.
Is There an Off-Site Copy?
The widely recommended approach is to keep three copies of your data, on two different types of media, with one stored off-site. If your only backup sits on a drive next to the server, a fire, flood or ransomware attack could wipe out both at once. A secure off-site or cloud copy is essential protection.
Don't Forget Microsoft 365
Many businesses assume their email, files and Teams data in Microsoft 365 are automatically backed up by Microsoft. They aren't, at least not in the way most people expect. If data is deleted, corrupted or lost to a compromised account, a dedicated third-party backup is often the only way to recover it.
