The Most Common Cyber Threats for Small Businesses

Phishing and business email compromise
Phishing remains one of the most effective ways to steal credentials, redirect payments or deliver malware. Messages can imitate suppliers, colleagues, cloud services and executives.
Filtering helps, but staff also need a simple process for checking unusual requests and reporting suspicious messages.
- Use multi-factor authentication on every important account
- Verify payment or bank detail changes out of band
- Train staff with short, realistic examples
Ransomware and malware
Malware can arrive through an attachment, a compromised website, a vulnerable remote service or a stolen account. Ransomware is particularly disruptive because it can affect shared files, backups and business operations.
Endpoint protection, patching, least privilege and tested offline or immutable backups all matter. No single product is a complete ransomware strategy.
Weak passwords and exposed accounts
Reused passwords give attackers a shortcut from one breached service into business systems. Shared admin accounts make it harder to understand what happened and easier for access to persist.
Use a password manager, unique credentials, MFA and separate administrator accounts. Review old accounts whenever someone leaves the business.
Cloud and supply-chain risk
Your security depends partly on the tools and suppliers you connect to. Misconfigured sharing, excessive permissions and unreviewed third-party access can expose data without a dramatic malware event.
Keep an inventory of services, review permissions and make sure contracts, backups and incident contacts are clear.
Start with the basics and keep improving
A risk review should end with a short, owned action list: protect identities, patch devices, secure email, test backups and rehearse how to respond.
Consistent basics usually reduce more risk than a complicated security stack that nobody monitors.
